When Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Viral Picture Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected cracking sounds echoing through the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. The person was a rescuer, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. It was just him running in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that large equipment and barefoot … He’s running at something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of instances of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and medical teams caring for many victims.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the location of the incident serving as a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, including entering the surf to assist people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, messages of appreciation flooded in. An online statement expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The group of beach patrol later shared a statement, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your kind words and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the group wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time lifeguards, said that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the violence commenced right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many powerful accounts, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a mayor.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous shores safe for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
