The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of California is enduring water scarcity. This milestone comes on the heels of difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.
A Chart Indicates An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
A recent update from the national drought tracker illustrated that the entire state is without any level of drought. This development came after multiple above-normal rainfall that helped fill key lakes like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” stated a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays
The journey here featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed unusually parched. Heavy rains at the start of the new year finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average
However, authorities caution that the end of drought status is not the same as complete water security. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation place it at only about 70% of the historical norm.
This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
