Several Hurt as Rough Air Hits Delta Plane into Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries when a Delta aircraft from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered significant turbulence Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

Emergency medical services said they evaluated five individuals, and transported three to hospital with minor injuries that such as pain in the back and headaches. The patients' ages spanned from their thirties and seventies.

It is the latest incident of aircraft being hit by severe turbulence, with aviation specialists indicating that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.

On board were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the Delta spokesperson added, adding that the plane landed "safely and normally" at the airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.

Emergency responders said they received a call just three minutes before the plane touched down, and emergency vehicles were standing by on the runway.

Why plane turbulence is becoming more frequent - and more severe.

During the past year, two dozen individuals were hurt when another Delta jet, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "severe" rough air just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

In 2024, travelers and staff on a certain international flight went through a frightening short but intense of severe turbulence. One passenger died and many were hurt, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and fell back down.

Turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while instances of significant turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are statistically infrequent.

Estimates show that there are approximately five thousand cases of severe-or-greater turbulence annually, out of a total of more than 35 million journeys that currently occur around the world.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the vertical motions of a plane experiencing disturbed air apply greater than a significant G-force on your body - enough to lift you out of your seat if you were not fastened by a safety belt.

As a changing climate shifts the conditions in the sky, researchers alert that flying could become less smooth: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the higher altitudes are expected to heighten the occurrence and strength of significant turbulence.
