Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" category.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Several parts of Delhi showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe threshold established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable standards.
Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that covers the capital as the cold season sets in.
Yet recently, the current city leadership approached the highest court to seek a easing of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judges approved the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around midnight to the most severe measurements seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.
International Effects
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also initiated a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated levels of pollution in the capital have remained as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Near celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak levels ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Pollution Sources
This crisis in the city is resulting from a combination of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, farmers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the capital as winter air sets in.
Health and Economic Consequences
Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous investigations.
These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature fatalities each year in Delhi.
