Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
